Duolingo Explained

Duolingo is an English language test that is new to the market. Over the last few years, the test has become more and more internationally accepted. It has become popular with students because it is shorter, cheaper, and available completely online from the comfort of your own home.

Exam Format and Scoring

The Duolingo English test evaluates reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary of the test taker. The total points available on the test are 160. The test is computer adaptive and the test gives 4 sub-scores out of 160 points. The 4 sub-scores are literacy, production, comprehension, and conversation. It is interesting to note that the test does NOT give a final score based on an average of 4 sub-scores, but instead the final score is based on how each question is weighted.

Question Types

Here is a list of the different question types that you will find on the exam:

• Listening to an expression and writing that expression
• Filling in the missing letters of words
• Choosing an actual English word from a list of actual and fake words
• Reading a given sentence out loud
• Speaking about a topic for at least 30 seconds
• Speaking about a topic for 1 3 minutes
• Explaining a picture in writing
• Writing a paragraph of at least 50 words
• Writing a 3 – 5 minute essay

Exam Dates

The exam does not have any specific dates and the test taker can register for the test at any given time through their online system.
